Is KidzHoops becoming too competitive?

In KidzHoops’ 10 years of existence, I’ve watched it grow from forty participants to its present maximum capacity of 144 kidz. Though it is a wonderful thing to see because more parents are now aware of our organized tournaments it is also something that worries me because many of us are losing the essence of RECREATION.

Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be “FUN" and provide every kid a sporting chance. This is KidzHoops mission and vision.

The truth is, only a tiny percentage of athletic kidz will win scholarships or go pro, so let us ‘adults’ focus on what's attainable and our youths’ long-term interest instead: GAINING SELF- CONFIDENCE, MAKING FRIENDS, BEING ACTIVE AND SPIRITED." It is our job to make sure that they will enjoy and love any sporting activities for health reasons, camaraderie and to learn to be respectful and be responsible children without the insane phrase of winning is the only thing!

Many if not all of our coaches are just parents with a passion. They're usually well-meaning, but they don't always have formal training in the sport or in dealing with kids except their own. Coaching in youth sport is about management; balancing ample playing time for all players and winning.

My advice to coaches in KidzHoops is to take a youth perspective approach when coaching. Give them the opportunity to engage in the game. You will only get to know their skill level if you give more than enough playing time. Be supportive and positive with your words and actions.

At the end of the day, only one question will always be asked by everyone….. “DID YOU HAVE FUN?”
